About a decade ago, websites were the latest, the in-things, the must-haves; businesses across the world recognized the need to have a web presence to remain relevant in an increasingly digital, connected world. But technology does not allow any one thing to reign for long; now it is the era of Mobile Apps. Merely having a website does not guarantee that you will remain in public memory in today’s highly competitive world.
Today we have mobile apps for
everything – shopping, checking your food intake, checking your stress levels,
watching sports matches live, paying your utility bills, banking transactions,
home automation, keeping track of your pregnancy chances – whatever you can
think of! In fact research studies predict that by 2017, mobile apps could be
downloaded more than 268 billion times, and generate revenue of over $ 77
billion! Mobile users will submit personalized data streams to over a hundred
apps and services every single day. Phew
– those are some mind boggling figures! It means that the place of computers as
the most important personal digital device is now being seriously challenged!
According to Brian Blau, a
research Director at Gartner (one of the top global technology research
organizations), mobile apps is the most convenient method to drive content and
services directly to customers, and so have become the official channel for
most business globally – big and small. He says “As users continue to adopt and
interact with apps, it is their data -- what they say, what they do, where they
go -- that is transforming the app interaction paradigm".
So basically it’s like an
unending circle: companies create apps, users provide input, and companies use
that to create even more apps!
With the development of wearable
gadgets, you can be sure that even more apps will flood the market. Wearable
devices are dependent on apps to deliver their functionality, as they are not
well equipped to accept user inputs themselves. As of now, wearable devices are
geared towards monitoring one’s health and exercise routines. It is expected
that the data collected by these devices’ apps will become increasingly
important, as it could provide important information on the trends in
lifestyles and health conditions of a good percentage of the population.
